Recorder and Recorder Consort by Alrun Pacher
The theme of the master class is Renaissance music from the time of the Medici. The Medici were an influential Italian family based in Florence from the 15th to the 18th century. Devoted to the arts, they supported artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Leonardo da Vinci. Their celebrations were framed by music, including the marriage of Grand Duke Ferdinando I to Christina of Lorraine in 1589, for which the comedy La Pellegrina by Girolamo Bargagli was performed. In the recorder consort we will study some of the intermezzi (interludes) contained therein, composed by notable Renaissance composers such as Cristofano Malvezzi, Luca Marenzio, and Giulio Caccini. We will also perform the motet "Nuper rosarum flores" by Guillaume Dufay, composed for the consecration of the Florence Cathedral in 1436. We will also explore mathematical connections between music and architecture. Participants are welcome to bring their own repertoire, especially for individual lessons. In 2026, Appassionato will offer a music seminar for the first time: For one week, every morning, 90 minutes will be devoted to exploring the Music of the Romanticism. Using composers such as Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, Weber, and Wagner, the seminar examines characteristics of Romanticism (character pieces, songs, timbres, harmony, themes) as well as their political and spiritual aspects. The seminar uses texts, images, sound examples, and reflections, can be attended independently or as a supplement to master classes, and offers a mentally and artistically exploratory journey. The course is led by Dr. Ulrike Kienzle. Information, Prices & Participation Requirements 2026 Registration Appassionato Master Classes Tuscany 2026 |

Seminars 2026
All course participants have the opportunity, throughout the week, to attend two additional seminars in parallel with the music courses that complement the regular teaching offerings:
"Music from the inside out!" – Sound, Body, and Presence in Music Making, seminar by Francesca Canali.
The seminar addresses in theory and practice the physiological, mental, and emotional foundations and processes that occur inside the musician’s body while playing/singing and are often invisible to the eye but crucial for the quality of sound and musical performance.
Through warm-up exercises and joint body, voice, and sound exercises with and without instrument, one’s self-perception and the conscious and differentiated perception of one’s own body and sound while playing/singing are promoted and refined. This enables the musician to perceptively observe, correlate, and then optimally shape and control the movements, sensations, and emotions experienced during playing/singing in their musical performance.
The goal of the seminar is to promote healthy, conscious, and artistically effective playing, to sensitize and optimize the physical, mental, and emotional processes during playing/singing, and thereby help prevent potential overuse complaints of the fine motor, vocal, and respiratory systems. The seminar is equally aimed at instrumentalists of all instruments as well as singers.

The Music of Romanticism: A Journey of Discovery in Words, Images, and Tones
with Dr. Ulrike Kienzle
In the 19th century, music was regarded as the most “romantic” of all the arts. But what exactly is Romanticism in music? Composers such as Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, and Franz Liszt developed the character piece and “Lieder ohne Worte” for piano, created wonderful song cycles, and symphonic poems. Timbre (tone colors) were integrated into the compositional process in novel ways, and harmony expanded. The fascination with the Middle Ages, political visions, and the search for transcendence inspired Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner to innovative developments in the field of opera. Yet Romanticism is not only an era; it is a mindset that remains as relevant and formative for our lives today as it was in the 19th century, to which we owe many of the most beautiful Romantic compositions. Through texts, images, sound examples, and shared reflections, this seminar explores Romanticism in its diverse facets. Look forward to an intellectual and artistic journey of discovery.
